Prescription DrugsPaying for prescription drugs is a hardship for many seniors who lack insurance coverage. This section may help you lower your prescription drug costs. The Golden Buckeye Prescription Drug Savings Program provides Ohio's older citizens and adults with disabilities significant savings on prescription medications at 99 percent of Ohio pharmacies. Begin to receive immediate savings on cash drug purchases when you use the Golden Buckeye card. Simply present the card at a participating pharmacy and automatically receive the best savings available. See the Golden Buckeye section. Ohio’s Best Rx is a statewide drug discount card program administered by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for Ohioans over age 60, or any age with income below Federal Poverty Level. Go to www.ohiobestrx.org for information about Ohio’s Best Rx. Save money by being a smart shopper for prescription drugs. l If cost is a concern, ask your physician if another medicine that costs less will work the same or whether a generic form of the medication is appropriate. l Use mail order and internet pharmacies to fill prescriptions at a discount. l If you have a chronic condition, ask your physician to write a prescription for a longer period of time. l If you are taking a medication for the first time, ask your physician for a free sample to see how you do on the medication before filling a prescription. l Ask your local pharmacy about special discount programs for seniors and ask your local pharmacy to match a discounted price offered by other pharmacies.
